Divot Derby Celebrates 50th Year

Junior Golf has come a long way since its inception in Pensacola, and judging by the success of last week’s 50th Divot Derby tournament, it will continue for a long time to come.

As reported in the Pensacola News-Journal, Bubba Watson starred as the presenting sponsor of the Divot Derby, providing players with a golf shirt and hat, visiting all the courses and paying for player photographs.

Like Tiger Woods, Watson has made junior golf his top charitable priority. In doing so, he is continuing the work he benefited from as a youngster.

When Watson was growing up, he was aided by Hiram Cook, then-golf pro at Tanglewood Golf and Country Club in Milton, where Watson often played daily. Cook founded the Greater Pensacola Junior Golf Association (GPJGA). Hiram Cook and his wife, Bonnie, have given of their time and money to help kids in the area learn and benefit from the game.

PGA professional Joe Durant has been another key component to junior golf’s continued prosperity. Durant, an Escambia High School alum, has donated a percentage of his yearly earnings on the PGA Tour, in addition to giving of his personal time and support. Durant's top fund raiser, the Joe Durant Adult-Junior Tournament, is Saturday, August 11th at A.C. Read Golf Course on Naval Air Station Pensacola.
