Pensacola athletes often shine brighter than the rest, and lately, they have been PROVING it!!! Here are some of the local stars making headlines for Pensacola. - Brock Sakey, a sophomore at the University of Central Florida and Gulf Breeze High School graduate, has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Brock posted a 21-9 overall singles record in his first year for the Golden Knights, and also made the Dean’s List both semesters. Great job, Brock! - The Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club put on a great show at the Southeastern Swimming Championships. Caroline Page from Pace won five of her six events, while Ryan Funk of Pace, Raymond Burch of Milton, and Zoe MacFarlane of Pensacola also finished high in their respective age divisions. Congratulations, swimmers! - Another Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club swimmer has been making a splash. Morgan Farrell, a senior at Washington High School, finished 14th in the 50-meter freestyle at the Junior National Championships and set a GPAC record with her 57.80 second 100-meter freestyle at the Junior Nationals. Way to go, Morgan! - Greg Whibbs, a junior at Troy University and Catholic High School graduate, has been selected as the Sun Belt Conference preseason all-conference kicker for the upcoming college football season. We hope that you have taken time to gather facts on both sides of the issue and have decided that the maritime park can be a valuable addition to the Pensacola community. Either way, make sure you get out and vote on the 5th. Here are some benefits of the maritime park. This information is from www.propensacola.com. Make sure to check out their site for more information about the park. The maritime park will… -Create a cultural, entertainment and recreational anchor on the waterfront in downtown Pensacola. -Develop multiple amenities, from the continuing education center to the maritime museum and multi-use stadium/festival park, enhancing the quality of life for everyone in the community. -Create facilities that, via baseball, sporting events, festivals, and other community events will attract outside visitors to downtown Pensacola. -Generate NEW tax revenue from increased sales and bed taxes. -Create dozens of NEW jobs. -Create hundreds of construction jobs, millions of dollars in wages, and tens of thousands of dollars in sales tax revenue during construction. -The Community Maritime Park will create a minimum of $1 million in land leases and real estate taxes.
